I’ve always been pretty fascinated with photography. A photographer’s ability to capture life’s best, most special and beautiful moments is a real talent. Andrew King, Owner of LuvRox Photography, is an insanely talented photographer, and I’m not just saying that because he was my wedding photographer. He takes risks and will work his ass off to produce the best shot. When our after party was winding down, I was sweating and wanting to jump in a pool, so I sort of jokingly mentioned that to Andrew, and before I knew it, boys were in their boxers dancing to ‘I’m too sexy for my shirt’ (yes, really) and we all went to the pool, jumped in (I almost drowned…wedding dresses are heavier than one might imagine), and Andrew and his team got, quite literally, the best shot ever. Enjoy today’s interview all about why Andrew loves his job so much, what inspires him, and who he’d LOVE to photograph.
When did you launch your business, LuvRox Photography, and what inspired you to do so?
LuvRox photography started out as King Me Productions many moons ago. King Me was a full service video production company from Los Angeles that moved out to FL in 2000. We went from full productions to very specialized high end social event video projects. Our clients were so impressed with what we were doing that they started asking us to actually video their event as well. That of course led to, “do you photograph it as well?” At the advent of strictly digital video, I was enjoying photography so much, that I sold off the video side of it, changed names, and haven’t looked back since!
Have you always been interested in photography? If not, when did you decide this is what you wanted to do?
I was always in the entertainment industry, in some form. ALWAYS photographing my life and adventures just for personal art and pleasure. My career path has been quite eclectic and varied, but I always had a camera no matter what I did. Those vast experiences and travels helped shape my style and outlook towards capturing images. And it STILL evolves and changes. Photography is a life-long educational process.
What’s your favorite part about your job? Most rewarding? Most challenging?
Every event is a new challenge, how to maintain the quality and standards that is expected while keeping everything seamless and stress free on the front end. With smiling clients that cherish everything from production time to the final product….. keeps me smiling for life!
What is your favorite thing/event to photograph?
People who love and appreciate photography! When subjects appreciate and WANT me to do what I really do… it becomes a symbiotic effortless flow with amazing results.
What’s your most favorite shoot you’ve ever done? Obviously your answer should be when Matthew and I jumped in the pool after our wedding/after party! 😉
But you are basically correct!! Like i just said, when subjects trust the process and just let me shoot, that’s my favorite event.. exactly what you DID!!
But really, what’s your favorite shoot and why?
But really…. that is the truth. My ‘favorite shoot” is a compilation of those experiences!
What advice would you give someone wanting to become a successful photographer like yourself?
Find your niche, practice, use all life experiences to help mold what you become, never stop learning, be humble, and the rest will happen!
Walk us thru a day in your life.
HAHAHA…I will run out of pixels!!!
If you weren’t a photographer, what would you be doing?
I partially do it……. I was a game designer for Disney Interactive in my early 20’s. With the advent of Escape Rooms becoming one of the fastest forms of entertainment in the US, I’ve already designed 6 rooms for other companies and built 3 that I own. They self-run, so I am a full time photographer still, but designing and playing Escape Room Adventures is my other hobby!
What inspires you?
Every single day I scour art magazines and online links for creative photographs. I try to dissect what made that composition worthy enough to be in that particular print/online. Then, I play around and try to put my spin on it using minimal tools.
What motto/quote do you always try to live by?
It’s all about “preventative medicine.”
I’m always trying to anticipate and prepare for my subjects and events, multiple scenarios, their outcomes, and how to deal with them, regarding anything and everything that is both good and bad on a shoot.
If you could photograph anyone in the world, living or not, who would it be and why?
Melvin James Kaminsky…. better known as Mel Brooks. He is my all-time favorite showbiz person. I love the great talent pool from the heyday of top comedians; Mel sits atop the pile! The stories and creative juices that man has… I would love to just sit back and hear his stories while doing a week long impromptu photo session following him around…kind of like The White House photographer, but, I’d be Mel’s personal photographer!
