An Interview with Meg Owen of Meg O. on the Go

meg-o-blogger

A beauty guru I am not, but I sure as heck love following beauty gurus to see what products they can’t live without! And Meg Owen, 33, is certainly someone I would call a beauty guru. She has a beauty and lifestyle blog, Meg O. on the Go, as well as a YouTube channel, where you’ll find TONS of makeup tips, tricks, and how to’s. However, she’s not only a blogger. She’s also a part-time junior high theater teacher and a wife and mama to two girls. She’s a busy gal, indeed. Keep on reading to find out what she loves most about running her blog, what a day in her life looks like, the beauty products every girl MUST have in her drawer, and much more.

When did you start your blog, Meg O. on the Go, and what inspired you to do so?

I started my blog in 2010, shortly after I got married, as a way for friends and family to keep up with our life as newlyweds. My blog has definitely evolved and grown as I have. I started really getting into beauty products, especially budget-friendly items (because I was in my twenties and poor), so I started blogging about that more. Then I had children, and they made their way into my blog! Now I use it as an outlet to empower busy women and moms to look and feel fabulous.

What’s your favorite thing about running your blog? Most rewarding? Most challenging?

My favorite thing is the friendships and connections that I’ve made throughout the years. My other favorite thing is that it fosters my itch to be creative AND entrepreneurial – I like challenging myself! The most rewarding part of blogging is that, even if I felt like something failed, one person will tell me they enjoyed a post or enjoy following along. It can get hard at times and you begin to second guess your work, so when someone compliments a post or tells you they enjoy your blog, it makes it all worth it! The most challenging part about blogging is having to treat it like a business. Sometimes that means I’m always thinking about it or don’t know when to stop working. Balance is really important!

You are a busy woman! You are a wife, mama to 2 adorable girls (my favorite Snapchat of yours, to date, is when your sweet girl sat on the couch with a big bowl, and poured the bag of Cheetos (was it Cheetos?!) in the bowl, which was so responsible of her, but then didn’t stop pouring and your couch was then a Cheetos factory HAHA), part time Theater Teacher, AND a blogger. Wow!  Walk us thru a day in your life. I imagine you’re never bored!

Haha! Yes, I am busy!! My girls definitely keep me on my toes at all time! Oh, Caroline (my 2-year-old) is quite a stinker! She is into everything and is full of sass. Kennedy, the 4-year-old eggs her on, and is also a loving energetic girl! Weekdays usually unfold this way

– The girls get up, we get dressed, eat breakfast, etc.

– School drop off at 9:30

– I get a few hours to myself to blog or run errands

– Get to my day job at noon

– Teach three theatre classes to energetic and emotional 11-year-olds

– Arrive home around 4:30. Kids get home before me with their babysitter!

– Make dinner, give baths

– Spend time with the family

– Put the kids to bed

– Catch up on some TV or Netflix with the husband

– Work on my blog ’til midnight

As well, you are a Co-Founder of the Perform on Pinterest Workshop, which I heard GREAT things about. As to not give too much away, can you give one of your top tips when it comes to Pinterest? I know you talk about it a lot on your blog and how important it is.

Thank you! We really have loved putting together this workshop and hope to do great things with it in the future. We were hoping to get another workshop in by the end of the year, but it looks like we’ll have another one in 2017! You can stay informed at www.performonpinterest.com.

If I were to give one tip when it comes to Pinterest is that it is not a social network – it is a search engine. Pinterest is a place where people come to discover content. Therefore, as much as you can get your content on Pinterest, the better your odds are at it getting discovered, repinned, and clicked! If you are looking to optimize your pins for Pinterest, take a look at this post.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a beauty and lifestyle blog?

Well, first of all – don’t be afraid! Definitely spend a lot of time taking a lot of great photos and brainstorming ideas. Learn your camera, how to photo edit, and WordPress from the get-go so you know how to do a lot on your own. Join Facebook groups for blog support and find a blog friend to bounce ideas off of.

You are quite the beauty guru! So, tell us, what 3 beauty items should every girl always have in her arsenal?

  1. A brow pencil. Brows ARE EVERYTHING!!!!
  2. Concealer. Because if anything, you can cover some dark circles and spots.
  3. Mascara. Even just a little mascara can help you look put together, even if you are not.

Favorite beauty product EVER and why?

Oh, come on! That’s like asking me to pick a favorite child! Haha! Okay… if I were to pick one thing, it would be the Anastasia Brow Wiz. I know it’s a boring choice, but it is a staple. Like I said, brows are everything. It is the one product that I continually repurchase and basically cannot live without!

What inspires you?

Browsing through Pinterest (no surprise that it’s my favorite!) and YouTube!

What motto/quote do you always try to live by?

“If you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sun beams and you will always look lovely.” -Roald Dahl

It always reminds me that I am in control of my happiness and success, and by choosing to have good thoughts, I will be a better wife, mom, and friend.

If you could have a meal with anyone, living or not, who would it be and why and what would you order?

This is a hard one! But I think it would be really awesome to go to a pub and get some fish and chips with William Shakespeare.

Thanks, Meg!
