I was lounging around in my favorite spot on the couch yesterday and scrolling through Netflix. I stumbled upon some movie that probably got 4% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it caught my eye. I honestly can’t remember the name of it, but it was about the end of the earth. An asteroid was planned to hit earth within three weeks, and a man was reconnecting with the love of his life to live the last days together…or something along those lines. I actually didn’t even end up finishing the movie, but it got me thinking.
You’ve heard it time and time again to live each day as if it were your last because you don’t know what tomorrow might bring. While it may come across as a bit, well, morbid, there’s a really good message in there. Life, this life, is all you have. Think about that. Life, this life, is all you have. It’s not a dress rehearsal. It’s not a preview. You’re currently living out the ‘movie’ of your life, as we speak. You’re not getting another, so why not live this one exactly as you’d like? Why not live it to the VERY fullest each and every single day.
Take the trip you’ve been wanting to take. Learn the skill you’ve been wanting to learn. Be with the person you want to be with. Enjoy the friends you want to enjoy. Spend your time doing the things that make you happy.
Because, here’s the thing. You’ll always be able to make up an excuse as to why you can’t (or shouldn’t) do something. There will ALWAYS be an excuse. It will never be the ‘right’ time, but let me ask you. When exactly is the right time?
You’ve been dying to go explore all over Spain. Well, save up the money, and get your tush to Spain. While you might say ‘Well, Spain isn’t going anywhere, and I’m just too busy right now. It’s just not a good time to travel.’ Make the time to do the things you want to do. No one else is living your life. No one else is going to travel to Spain for you.
You’ve been wanting to learn how to surf but you keep telling yourself you could spend that time doing more ‘important’ things. Well, this is me telling you to go surf. And enjoy every minute of it.
You spend time with people who bring you down and make you feel shitty. STOP spending time with them. And don’t feel bad about it.
This life that we’re in is only happening once. While there aren’t many guarantees in life, I can guarantee you that this life is only happening once. So, start LIVING. Stop waiting.
While it might have been some dumb movie, it certainly had a good takeaway.
Do what you would do and live the life you’d live if you knew you only had a few weeks left to do so.
And, with that, let’s do this, Monday.
